Detroit A Film That Everyone Must See This Year

Kathryn Bigelow is slowly but surly becoming one of my favourite directors out there, the first film I watched of hers was 2009s The Hurt Locker, a war film about bomb disposal experts in Iraq, that film was thrilling and a proper edge of your seat flick, her next film was Zero Dark Thirty a film about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden again it was thrilling exciting and an eye opener in to how the operation to find and kill the most wanted man alive became a reality. Detroit however does something different sure it’s gripping and tense but it’s more of an eye opener on such a dark time in American history.

It takes place in the late 60s in Detroit, we see police shut down an illegal bar, as they are arresting the customers things take a turn for the worst when an angry protester hurls rocks at the police, suddenly Detroit has become a war zone and this film doesn’t waste anytime as it literally jumps straight in, from there we see the cops, the national guard and the army deployed, all while this is happening and incident in a motel is taking place, this will be known as the Algiers Motel incident, I’m not saying what happens but let me tell you it’s not pretty.

As all this is going on I’m looking around the cinema and seeing everyone’s reactions, some have their head in their hands others are just merely looking on with shock, as was I during this, it certainly was an eye opener and sheds much needed light on such a dark time in American history, the film as a whole was dark, gritty and very powerful to say the least, there are some jaw dropping and emotional scenes particularly one where a member of the national guard thinks an innocent little girl is a sniper and starts shooting at the window where she was looking.

All in all Detroit is an eye opening film for the right reasons it sheds light on a tragic subject in the USA one that I think needs to be addressed and Kathryn Bigelow certainly does that, the film stars John Boyega as a security guard in charge with protecting a store while the riots are taking place, it also stars Will Poulter as a cop during the riots, I enjoyed this film and hope you do too final rating 10/10.

Until next time catch you later

Star Wars: The Force Awakens…. Or Star Wars: The Return Of The Franchise Strikes Back With A New Hope

See what I did there…. So yes the Star Wars franchise returns to the cinema screens with amazing results, the film has broke… Well not broke but smashed box office records making the fastest film to earn 12 million, Avatar managed to do it in thirteen days but Star Wars managed to it in twelve, yeah twelve days to earn 12 million amazing, so let’s take are tie-fighters and x-wings and fly in to a galaxy far far away… I wonder how Star Wars puns I can fit in to this review.

So if you you haven’t  seen this film then Luke no further because there will be no spoilers here… See what i did there anyway the film introduces some new characters including brand new terrifying villain Kylo Ren, oh believe me when I say terrifying I mean terrifying, we have new Stormtroopers who work for the First Order, one of them is called Finn, he then meets Rey a scavenger on the planet Jakku, who then meets BB-8 who is arguably the most cutest droid out there.

They go on to meet Han Solo and Chewbacca, who help BB-8 to find Luke Skywalker who has disappeared, and the only way to find him is a map, and there you go the plot for the force awakens no spoilers at all. I absolutely loved loved loved this movie it’s a proper throwback to the old trilogies none of that prequel rubbish  anyway it’s a really fun film, when the titles come on and we see the line ” a long time ago in a galaxy far far away” be prepared for the most well known theme tune out there you know it I know lets sing it together… Ahem… Daaaaa dadadada dadadadadadadaaaa dadada da da dada da daaaa da dada da daaaa da dadadaaaaa….. You get the point. Anyway I give this film a solid 10/10 it’s awesome it’s action packed it’s amazing.

Chef, heartwarming story check, amazing comedy check, food porn that makes you drool oh you better believe that’s a check

Chef is one of those underrated films of 2014 it stars Jon Faverau, Sofia Vergara and rising star Emjay Anthony basically this is food porn the movie, the food they make is just so damn good it makes your mouth drool like Niagara Falls.

Jon Faverau plays a resteraunt chef named Carl Casper whose boss is (pardon my French) a bit of a dick, he won’t let him cook what he wants just what is on the menu that the boss created, a big shot food critic shows and dramatically slams Carl criticising his food, so he quits his job and works on a food truck, he goes on one hell of a tasty road trip with his son and newly promoted sue chef Marvin.

What was good about this film was that it was hilarious, there were so many laugh out loud moments, there’s one part where Marvin stuffs corn starch down his crotch, then Carl and then making his son do it, then saying probably one of the best lines in the film “in the morning you dip it in oil and make it look like a hush puppy” haha I don’t know why but a childish chuckle burst out of me like the chestburster from alien (minus the blood and gore)

However the main part to this film was the food, oh my god the food was making my mouth water so much there was a puddle on the floor, you cannot help but go mmmmm! (or maybe sing food glorious food from Oliver) the food was the best part of the entire film, but what would I rate this film, well isn’t it obvious it’s a definite 10/10 the food was amazing the comedy was perfect and the whole story line was very heartwarming, so do  your self a favour go and watch Chef it’s amazing and as always catch ya later.

The Martian Review

Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi film stars Matt Damon as an astronaught who is thought to be dead on Mars, but he is in fact still alive and trying to grow crops and attempting to survive.
So Ridley Scott’s new film has opened to critical and box office success, except for one reviewer (me) who really didn’t like this film, now before all the hate comes let me give my reasons why I didn’t like this film, one thing is its run time it’s 141 minutes long so it’s pretty long indeed. The other reason why I didn’t like this film was because it was dull, I felt like a payed for a one way ticket to dullsville when watching this, firstly they are trying to get Matt Damon back to Earth which takes the entire length of the film now don’t get me wrong it was interesting, but for the length of the film it really did drag.
However the only good thing about this film was the soundtrack, (there’s a really funny end credits song but I won’t spoil that for you) the soundtrack mainly has 70s era music, one of the crew really enjoys listening to it the the soundtrack contains a song one on of my favourite singers David Bowie, any way the soundtrack was probably the best part of the film, but it doesn’t help the films dullness.

The effects are also the best part of the film, when the storm hits is probably the best part so I guess the movie does have at least one good thing about it right? Anyway my thoughts on this movie, well it was long and dull and personally I didn’t like it I would give it a solid 2/10 the effects were great but the length was really really long.

So all in all its a pretty dull film but hey that’s just my opinion, what did you think of The Martian did you think it was dull? Or did you enjoy it let me know but until next time catch ya later.

Reservoir Dogs Review

Quentin Tarantino’s debut hit has finally found its way on to my collection of DVDs, well Blu-Rays to be exact and this is probably one of the biggest debuts I have seen a director make, the film has developed a massive cult following, and of course with a Tarantino movie you are going to get a very eclectic soundtrack, and this film has no exceptions with tunes ranging from Blue Swedes Hooked On A Feeling, to Little Green Bag, I always say to myself the soundtrack makes the film, a film with no soundtrack is like cake without custard it’s good on its own but misses the main ingredient that makes it special.

The film was realeased in the 90s and stars a big ensemble cast including Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi and Quentin Tarantino. The characters are all named after colours, for example Mr orange, Mr brown and Mr pink (“why do I have to be Mr pink” “because I fucking said so”) one of the great pieces of script right there not to mention my favourite line of all time in the film “you gonna bark all day little doggy or are you gonna bite” whoever Tarantino has hired to write his scripts he has done an amazing job, mind you everyone of his films have great lines including the infamous Ezekiel 22:17 line from Pulp Fiction (but that’s a review for another day) any way back to Reservoir Dogs.

The plot isn’t that confusing or impossible to follow, a group of thieves go and rob a jewellery store which doesn’t go according to plan, one of them is an undercover cop and the whole film is the fallout from the heist, the film also is told in flashbacks ranging from the setup of the heist to the actual heist itself. Now what did I think of this movie, well it was pretty good I am a huge fan of Tarantino, I like his eclecticness of the soundtracks, and also the scripts he produces are brilliant too, the line delivery is perfect and quick also the lines are sharp and quick fired by the actors saying them. Anyway I would give Reservoir Dogs a solid 10/10 it’s a great film and everyone should watch this, I would really recommend it.

Christopher Nolan you confusing sod

I love a good Christopher Nolan flick, but my god why does he make films so confusing, Inception confusing, The Prestige confusing and now Intersteller Christopher Nolan’s new film. So where do I begin with this one, I can honestly say I have never been so mind blown and confused in my life, any way the film stars Matthew Mconaughey, Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine and the film is about…. Well it’s about…. Umm… It’s about… Okay I’m going to be straight with ya I have absolutely no clue what this film is about I couldn’t even tell you, all I know is this right brace yourselfs cause going to be a long ride, this is Intersteller.

Right so Earth is dying, crops are dying, basically we’re fucked and Matthew Mconaughey who plays Cooper an ex NASA astronaut who has to find another earth in a newly discovered wormhole, a few spacecraft went in to this wormhole but never returned so Cooper and a few other astronauts have to go into this wormhole and find a planet habitable for us, they succeeded in finding a planet, so they venture down and see what this planet has in store for us, so turns out that two hours on this planet is the equivalent of a few years back on the ship, (still with me good) so once they go back to the ship to find that one crew member has aged, oh I should tell you that Cooper has a daughter named Murphy, who believes that her room is haunted by a ghost who pushes books off of a shelf (you’ll get why I am telling you this in a jiffy)

So they find out that Micheal Caine who is the lead scientist in this project has lied about a plan called plan a which basically means that this mission is good and we can travel to this planet and the lab that they are working on is good for launch (yeah the lab they are in at the start of the film is a big space shuttle) God I’m terrible at explaining the plot of this film, I’m leaving important stuff out, any who cut a long story short murph is older and working as a scientist, Cooper travels back to earth but there is a problem and finds himself in a timey wimey space time continuem mix up and is transported to a place kinda like a limbo type area, I don’t know just go with it, any way turns out that Cooper is in fact Murphy’s ghost, he is the one pushing the books of the shelf (still with me yeah you good okay) so umm Cooper sends a message using morse code to older Murphy, she gets the message and bam she yells eureka for some reason, then Cooper wakes up in a hospital bed in the future!! turns out Murphy is about 80 years old and is lying in a hospital bed, she tells cooper some stuff, and then we see Anne Hathaway’s character on a planet or someplace, talking about some space timey wimey type stuff, then the film ends.

And that was Intersteller and if you are still with me then thank god, because I was losing the plot with this movie, I mean I was bored out of my mind, the run time was 163 minutes, that’s three hours long ( I would not recommend you do a Christopher Nolan marathon because you are going to be there for a very long time, any way I absolutely hated this movie, one it was boring i mean really really boring, my mind was blown away at the special effects but it couldn’t help the dull storyline, which lets face it if you have a degree in science and space and time, your going to get what this movie is about, unfortunately I don’t have any of them things so I didn’t get storyline at all, I would give this movie a 1/10 the effects were good but the storyline was dull and boring, so that was Intersteller one of the most confusing films I have seen in my life.

I hope you enjoyed this review as it may be my last review on here as I am heading for a new website named Cultjure who are a movie website that post news and reviews, so guys this is goodbye I may be on here to review some other films but I can’t promise anything so guys until next time catch ya later.

Wes Craven dies aged 76

Sadly I’m not reviewing a movie, I have just read that famous horror director Wes Craven has sadly passed away aged 76 of brain cancer, Craven was best known for bringing to our screens the legendary horror movie villain Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare On Elm Street and of course the teen slasher horror hit Scream Craven’s first feature film was The Last House On The Left (if you haven’t seen this movie I would really recommend it) he then went on to direct The Hills Have Eyes (the 1970s original not the crappy remake) after seeing some of his work he had become one of my favourite horror directors and his films have gone on to spawn franchises and have been made landmarks in the horror genre, my thoughts are with his family and friends who knew him, r.i.p Wes Craven 1939-2015

Move over Ghost Protocol Mission Impossible 5 is the best one yet

So as you can see I went to watch Mission Impossible 5 or Rougue Nation, and I have to say wow! What an entry we have here to the Mission Impossible franchise, the stunts were amazing it makes you wonder how Tom Cruise is still alive after doing this stunts, since he doesn’t use a stunt double he does all the stunts himself.

The film stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner and Alec Baldwin and for all you people who wanna know the run time it was 135 minutes (two and a half hours) long so it isn’t at all long at all, oh and it’s directed by Christopher Mcquarrie (he directed Jack Reacher) unfortunately I can’t tell you the plot because there are a hell of a load of spoilers normally I would spill the beans but so much goes on in this film that I would not like to reveal, so let’s dive in.

Okay I can say about the stunts in the film and I wanna draw your attention to the first stunt at the opener of the film where Ethan Hunt appears and jumps on to a Russian cargo plane carrying neurotoxins called nerve gas, he hangs on to the door asking fellow field agent Benji to open the door suddenly the plane takes off with Tom Cruise hanging on to the door, now that stunt was impressive I loved the way it was shot (the cinematographer has done an amazing job) I mean the whole film as a whole was shot perfectly, oh and that soundtrack though, there’s a part in the film which takes place at a showing of Turandot (a famous Italian opera) a fight breaks out all to the tune of Nessun Dorma, now that was really effective I mean I had shivers down my spine, my heart was racing, I’m not saying no more because I don’t want to ruin the story.

Now let’s talk about the cast, now I said this last time I watched a Mission Impossible film and that is “my god Tom Cruise has surpassed himself with the stunts this time round” and boy does he I mean for a 50 year old guy (yeah I couldn’t believe it either when I heard) he can do some impressive stunts, then there’s Simon Pegg as Benji now just like Ghost Protocol Pegg is absolutely hilarious in this film I mean he is my favourite character in the film, he does have some amazing lines in this, also returning is Jeremy Renner as analyst William Brandt, now I like Jeremey Renner but Christ on a bike I can’t stand his character, I mean whenever Ethan came up with a plan he always popped up saying NO!!! We cannot do that, now look I understand he is trying to do what’s best but my god Ethan has been doing this since the 90s you’ve come along in Ghost Protocol, any who he wasn’t the only character who I didn’t like, Rebecca Ferguson’s character is irritating as hell I mean one second she’s good next she’s a villain, then you’ve got Alec Baldwin as Hunley a guy trying to stop the team from doing their missions, so with that said the cast is pretty impressive I mean really impressive they have all done good jobs.

So my final opinion on this film well overall it’s very impressive the stunts as I have said before are really awesome, I will give this film a solid 10/10 mainly because of the action and the stunts Oh and the storyline it’s not to complicated and not to confusing to understand any way I hope you enjoyed my review of Rougue Nation and as always catch ya later

The Gallows the worst found footage movie since As Above So Below

Remember the found footage genre, films like the Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity (the first one not the crappy sequels) and Rec those films were friggin amazing but alas you do get the bottom of the barrel found footage movies, films like As above So Below, Grave Encounters 1 and 2 and The Gallows which is the newest entry at the bottom of the barrel.

Now The Gallows does have its moments I’m not going to lie, but some of the scares are rehashed over and over again which does get really really dull and very quickly do you find yourself going in circles, so let’s dive in to this bottom of the barrel and take a look at The Gallows.

We open on a teenager named Charlie Grimille who is in his school play known as The Gallows, halfway through the closing scene a freak accident happens with the noose killing Charlie. Cut to 20 years later and we find the same school 20 years on from the incident is putting on the same play, that’s like an incident happening on the stage show Macbeth and then reopening in the same theatre 20 years on you wouldn’t do it so why? Any who a guy called Reece is playing the lead role to fight for his love for his crush Pheifer Reece’s friend takes the piss out of him for being in the play, so they along wih Reece’s mates girlfriend Cassidy break in to the school and vandalise the set.

Pheifer finds out what they are doing and is angry but once they get back on stage the set has magically repaired.

Halfway through the film they see a TV with news footage about Charlie along with an interview with his girlfriend, once out of the room thy hear footsteps above them and suddenly Cassidy is hung with a noose but survives only to have a wound round her neck which gets worse as time goes on, Reece’s mate has died after getting hung by the mysterious figure known as the hangman scared and frightened they try to find a way out but can’t (as everything is locked because they are in a school) the hangman almost kills Reece but he survives, meanwhile Cassidy is sitting by some stairs crying nursing the wound on her neck but suddenly a noose appears and she is dragged down the stairs kicking and screaming.

Reece and Pheifer are on the stage trying to hide from the hangman then the stage lights come on and thy act out a scene from the play, the stage then opens on the gallows (the hanging noose where charlie died) Pheifer still in character yells her lines as Reece tells her to stop, in the background you see the hangman pull the lever killing Reece, the hangman along with Pheifer take a bow revealing a figure in the audience… Ready for the mysterious figure… It’s Charlie Grimille’s girlfriend who gives a standing ovation and claps.

Now we cut to cops coming to a house after getting a call the two cops come in and see a mother and a daughter sitting on a bed while the mother is brushing the daughters hair, the news footage is rolling and it shows the story of Charlie, suddenly charlie appears outta nowhere and kills the cop then the screen cuts to black and then the credits roll.

And that was the gallows, wow, I mean wow what a disappointment this film was, the acting was atrocious as was the whole plot oh my god was the plot bad, when I first heard of this film I thought it was great I mean the trailer sold me, but alas the trailer proved to be better than the actual film itself.

I do think the found footage is dying sadly, the Blair Witch Project an Paranormal Activity were I think the benchmark for the found footage genre, but now it’s all the same rehashed garbage that comes out of Hollywood, oh no there’s a ghost oh no, seriously Hollywood get some better ideas you have made some gems in your time like whiplash and foxcatcher, keep at that don’t just use the same old story again, okay rant over, anyway I would give the gallows a miss don’t waste your money or time with this film. Do you agree with my opinion do Hollywood use the same stories over and over and over again let me know, until next time catch you later.
