Underrated horror films come in all shapes and sizes, you can get a gem or you can get a flop, a snooze fest to an edge of your seat thrill ride, the Sacrament was… Neither, well it was kind of a horror I mean the horror of what happens in the film yeah, if your looking for jumpscares then this really isn’t the film for you. The film says it’s based on true story and it is, they have borrowed events form the Jonestown massacre, if you don’t know what that was then I will tell you, back in the 70s there was a group called The People’s Temple Agricultrual Project, seems like a nice name for a group, well anyway they had a group in Jonestown near Guyana, now this became notorious because it caused the deaths of 913 people in the commune (cause of deaths were cyanide poisoning) so anyway I have digressed lets get back on subject umm oh yeah the sacrament.
The story follows a real life company called Vice (they do documentaries about all sorts of stuff in the world) here’s a link to the their YouTube channel https://m.youtube.com/user/vice so they are interviewing a guy called Patrick who works for Vice, Patrick’s sister is a recovering drug addict living in a place called Eden Parish, run by a man only known as Father, Patric along with two cameramen working for vice head over to Eden Parish, after a close call with some guards at the entrance of the commune Patrick’s sister turns up and apologises for the mixup, they enter and see what the commune are doing, father has saved all of the community of Eden Parish, they meet a nurse who tells the crew that they are fully stocked with medical supplies because the members funded them by selling all of their possessions.
Patrick goes of with the sister, and the other two cameramen are shown to their cabins, there they meet a mute girl and her mother (who acts very shady towards them) after interviewing some of the members, they finally have a meeting with Father himself, after an awkward interview, father tells them to party, while the party is going on, the mute girl hands a note requesting the cameramen to help, turns out a small group of people want to leave, and accuse father of of brainwashing and abusing the commune, they try to help.
They find Patrick having a threesome, Patrick’s sister comes out drunk and tells them that they need his money, becoming suspicious they become angry and distrustful of father and try to sleep through the night, the next morning they see the people want to get out of there, and father disapproves, one of the cameramen go to the helicopter to try and delay the pilot, it doesn’t work, and the pilot is shot, back at the camp a fit is breaking out the cameraman tries to break it up but Patrick’s sister denounces him and takes him hostage.
Father gathers the commune and persuades them to drink cyanide laced Kool Aid if they refuse they are shot dead, the cameraman who went to the helicopter pilot comes back to find everyone dead apart form the armed guards, Patrick is with his sister as she injects him she cradles him in her arms until he dies, the cameramen are with father who takes some drugs and then shoots himself dead, the cameramen then make it out by the skin of their teeth.
And that was the sacrament, now this ticked all the boxes for me, found footage yes, suspenseful yes good story line oh yes, this film was great I mean really great, it never had any flaws at all, the only flaw I would say was its run time it’s about 80-90 minutes, but apart from that it was a good film I would give this film a 9/10 only for the run time and that’s it.
You can the information on the true story here if you are interested, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown this is the event that the film is based on until next time catch you later.
