Okay so I have just probably seen the greatest film ever of 2014, a little film called Whiplash, now I had never heard of this film until I saw it the BAFTAS this year so I thought I’d go and see it, and I did and what a film it was tense yes, edge of your seat a big yes, so what made this film so great, well the plot was great as was the acting (particularly J.K Simmons) who pays the psychotic music teacher, Miles Teller plays a student called Andrew Neiman in his first year at Schaffer Conservatory music school, he plays the drums really well and catches the attention of a music teacher named Terrence Fletcher (J.K Simmons) who asks Neiman to join his class with other musicians, Andrew does and cue a ride in to insanity.
J.K Simmons plays the part well as the music teacher, my heart was pounding everytime he yelled at one of his students and in a way you feel sorry for these students especially Neiman who gets slapped by fletcher because he is not following the tempo that fletcher is setting. The whole plot was fantastic as is the jazz music in the film trust me your feet will be tapping along with the soundtrack.
So we see how good Neiman is and my god if you love drumming you will love this movie, mainly because the drum solos in here are amazing I won’t spoil anything but let’s just say the final solo had me tapping my foot along with it and clapping when it had finished.
If you love a good musical drama then this is the film for you even if your not a fan of drumming if you want to see some amazing drum solos then this is also the film for you. I mean as I was typing this out I was imagining that I was on a drum set, it may not win best picture at the Oscars (boyhood is a real contender this year) but it definitely wins a best picture award from me. Overall I would give Whiplash an awesome 10/10 from me.
