The Oscars

Now I know what your thinking “But the Oscars happened last week why are you dong this now” and I know it did but i decided to watch them because I wanted to know who won certain awards (best picture included) and I have to say for this years Oscars I have never felt so awkward watching them.

Let’s get started with one of the problems, the host Neil Patrick Harris, now at first I thought he was going to be great but let’s just say he can not crack a joke, with every time he told a joke the audience never laughed or cracked a smile (all you needed was tumbleweed) seriously his jokes were God awfully bad, definatly not as good as barney from how I met your mother. Another problem was how predictable the awards were gonna be (I know your gonna disagree with me on this one but hear me out) they were predictable because when you saw who was up it was obvious who was going to win the best picture award I did not see coming at all this year, although there was some surprising winners this year, but I have my own theory, when ever someone wins a BAFTA they are in the seat to win an Oscar, boyhood won for best supporting actress and she won an Oscar as well, now I know it’s a rubbish theory but that’s my opinion.

But enough complaining let’s take a look at who the winners were. For best picture Birdman (didn’t see that one coming at all) now this was up against films like Selma, American Sniper even boyhood lost to Birdman. Another shock was in the best animated film category (I’m still glad big hero 6 won) but that doesn’t mean you snub the Lego movie I mean come on that film was the definition of awesome still at least it was up for best original song for everything is awesome (if you’ve not heard that song then you’ve been living under a rock) but hey at least it won a BAFTA, at least How To Train Your Dragon 2 was up (that film was awesome by the way) there were plenty more shocks but lets just say that opening number was the best (Jack Blacks part was awesome)

Here is a list of all the other nominees and winners http://oscar.go.com/nominees if your interested in having a look.

And that was my opinion on the Oscars this year I hope you enjoyed it and let me know what you thought of them, did you get your predictions right or wrong, did your favourite film win or lose, let me know I would love to hear from you until next time catch you later.

Top Five Films I have Seen

So instead of a review I thought to do a list of my top films I have seen, what are your top films let me know in the comments. So let’s get started with number five.

5) Boyhood

Now I loved this movie, if you don’t know what this is you have been living under a rock as this has been the most talked about film, it follows a boy called mason who we see age for 12 years. The reason I liked this film is because of how it was filmed (I mean for 12 years that’s something) also the soundtrack is pretty damn awesome, from Coldplay to Arcade Fire. The reason it’s at number five is the fact that it dragged out near the end but nonetheless it was a very good nostalgic trip with this one.

4) GoodFellas

Now I love a good gangster flick and goodfellas is one of my personal favourites, the story follows true life gangster Henry Hill as he rises the the ranks of being a gangster, with an all star cast including Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro, this is a really good film, plus it’s a Martin Scorsese flick (one of my favourite directors) if you love a good gangster flick definitely check this one out.

3) Mad Max

Now normally it takes a lot to get me interested in an 80s action flick, one time on a day off from college I stumbled upon this film, so I decided to download it (and cue one of the best action films of the 80s) so we follow a guy called you guessed correctly Max, he is a highway cop and family man (aww) well after his family is murdered (in a really really gruesome way) by ruthless bikers he goes on a revenge fuelled mission to take down the bikers who slayed his family. I really enjoyed this film, but it does take a long time for the family die (they die like ten minutes near the end of the film) but I really enjoyed it.

2) Gone Girl

Gone Girl… Oh boy what a film (David Fincher is a master at crime dramas) what can I say about this, tense yes, twist filled oh boy yes, so the film follows Nick Dunne whose wife goes missing and he tries to find her, but his behaviour sparks trouble with the police who think he might have something to do with it. The wife (played fantastically by Rosamund Pike) is a nutter and I mean an absolute nutter, I won’t say anymore because your gonna have to see for yourself, but nonetheless it is a very good crime drama.

And finally.

Number 1! Shutter Island

You know I said that Scorsese is one of my favourite directors, well this film is probably one of my favourites by him (this plus Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street) so we follow a detective who goes to a mental hospital to find a missing person (that’s all I’m gonna say as the film takes a very very good twist) this film is number one because my heart was racing and pounding throughout the whole film, storyline wise it’s very good, acting very very good (Ben Kingsley as the head of the institute is fantastic)

And those are my top five favourite movies, let me know what you think comment your opinion and let me know what your top five films are, until next time catch you later.

Gone Girl Review (major spoilers ahead!!!)

Okay never has a movie frustrated me like this film, the story follows a guy called Nick Dunne played by Ben Affleck, well his wife goes missing (or so you think) well the police get involved with the crime and start getting a little suspicious of Nick, as they start suspecting that he might have something to do with his wife’s disappearance. We find that Nicks wife has left him clues (since this falls on their fifth wedding anniversary and the wife leaves clues about where she has put gifts) so as he follows the clues the police find the wife’s diary and see that it says that she fears her husband will kill her.

once all this has happened we see the wife driving in a car, we then find out that the wife is setting Nick up and committing suicide and then framing him for her murder. So she stays in a motel where she makes a friend with one of the people staying there, as they bond we see some news footage of what going on with the husband. The wife after getting robbed by the friend she bonded with goes and stays with her ex boyfriend at his mansion, after seeing some more news stories she realizes what she has done and after having sex with her ex she slits his throat with a box cutter.

After this she goes back to the husband (this is the part where i got frustrated) i got frustrated because after all that she goes back to the husband even though she wanted him framed for her suicide like seriously why would you do that, it didn’t ruin the film for me but it definitely made me mad.

Okay so what did i think of the film you say, well i really enjoyed it i love a good crime drama (prisoners is my top favorite) plus its by the guy that done The Social Network and Seven. Overall i thought it was a very good crime drama acting wise I think Rosamund Pike as the wife was fantastic as was Ben Affleck, overall i give this film a 10/10 for story and acting, let me know what you thought of this film until next time catch you later

Kingsman: Secret Service review (spoilers ahead)

Okay so I didn’t really see myself seeing this one, I mean I really wanted to go see it but to me this is one of the films where I can wait to get it on DVD, but since there was absolutely nothing up at my local cinema this was the film that stood out to us, so I went with some friends and watched what I thought was a suprisinlgy awesome movie.

The whole movie follows a teen called Eggsy (no idea where the nickname originated from) anyway we follow him and after he gets the news that his father has died while on an assignment he gets a visit from a guy called Galahad (Colin Firth) who I have to say played this part really well, well Galahad works for a secret spy agency called The Kingsman, they are trying to stop a guy called Richmond Valentine (Samuel L Jackson) and I have to say he played the villain really well, any way Valentine has made a new SIM card for people that is inserted into your noggin (sounds painful) but what happens to this SIM card is pretty grim but let’s not jump ahead.

Now we see Eggsy go through some ruthless training drills, that in my opinion give the James Bond films a run for their money, so Galahad goes to valentines house for a gala he is hosting and realizes he is the only one there (turns out he made a big donation) so after a dinner Galahad goes back to his office to see if he found anything suspicious, and the only thing he can find is is a cult hate church in Kentucky so he goes and investigates (and cue one of the most epic fight scenes in a movie) Galahad sits and watches the priest say his things and gets up to leave but is stopped in his tracks by a woman asking why he is leaving so early to which he replies in one of the most greatest comebacks ever I’m a Catholic whore, currently enjoying congress out of wedlock with my black Jewish boyfriend who works at a military abortion clinic. Hail Satan, and have a lovely afternoon madam” and cue one of the best fights ever, the whole church suddenly has the most violent punch up ever all to the tune of Lynrd Skynrds free bird (now to me that sounds pretty fucking awesome.) anyway after the punch up Galahad comes out and meets Valentine, Valentine then shoots Galahad in the head killing him (I did tell you there were spoilers)

So as the film goes on Valentine has a base somewhere Eggsy and another trainee go there, they see what old Mr Valentine has planned (a massive culling of the human race using the SIM cards implanted in your noggin) so Eggsy has to dress like Galahad and goes to stop Valentine with his dastardly plan, now it all goes swimmingly until Eggsy gets cornered by a massive parade of guards, Eggsy tells a guy who had trained him to activate the security protocol (now this is probably the best bit of the film that and the church fight) once activated all the guards heads explode all the the tune of pomp and circumstance (land of hope and glory) now I have never laughed so hard in the cinema before but I almost wet myself at this bit, well after that happens they finally catch up with Valentine but as they get there he activates his culling device and before you know it give it up by Kool and the gang blares out and everyone around the world starts beating everyone up, and I mean the entire world goes to shit.

Well they manage to stop it but valentines phones a satellite to help with the culling device, as that’s counting down Eggsy has a fight with valentines henchwoman called gazelle who for a weapon has prosthetic feet with blades on shoes, Eggsy kills her with a blade concealed in his shoe, eggsybthen kills Valentine and the whole world lives happily ever after yay.

So my thoughts on Kingsman, well I thought it was hilarious I mean really laugh out loud hilarious it’s by the same guy who died kick-ass so the OTT violence wasn’t much of a suprise, but how the fighting scenes were filmed were fantastic I mean they had slow mo shots everytime someone got hit with something and then sped up as soon as they hit the floor, I mean it was fantastic, overall I would give Kingsman as solid 9/10 mainly because it did get a bit dull at some points but nonetheless it was fantastic, so what are you waiting for go and see Kingsman and tell me your thoughts until next time catch you later.

Big Hero 6 Review spoilers ahead

Now as I said in my last review I am a sucker for all things Disney (my favourite has to be The Lion King) so when Disney released Big Hero 6 I had to go and see this, so I did, I took my little brother and off we went to see disney’s latest film.

So what happens, well Big Hero 6 follows a 14 year old boy called hiro whose brother has passed away in a fire, now hiro’s brother has left behind a big balloon looking guy called Beymax and together they go and stop a guy in a Mexican wrestler mask. So what was my favourite part, well it has to be when Hiro and Beymax are talking to a cop about what happened to them earlier, and Beymax starts deflating and is losing power (and cue the most hilarious 15 minutes) so as they go home Beymax starts losing power and starts becoming delusional and crazy (he strokes a cat and says “hairy baby”) and that had the cinema in fits of laughter, including me I mean I was on the floor almost this film was so funny, I was proper laughing out loud and some parts, my laughing got so bad my sister and to shush me but that only made me laugh more, I mean I have never laughed at a Disney film since seeing the Swedish shopkeeper in Frozen.

So after that we find out the true person behind the Mexican mask its in fact the (spoiler alert) professor at the college where Hiro goes (that’s the place where his brother dies) so we learn that he is the guy doing all of this, now I have to say for a Disney film it was predictable, I mean I knew that the brother was gonna die and that it was the professor behind the mask all a long, I mean it’s a Disney film you can’t have a Disney film with out a family member dying right? So what did I think of big hero 6? Well I thought it was awesome I mean it had action, laugh out loud comedy and it was a load of fun to watch I would definitely recommend this film if you are a fan of Disney or have children and want to take them out, then go and see this film you won’t be disappointed I guarantee it, so my score for this film a solid 10/10 big hero 6 definatly wins best animated movie at the Oscars in my books, so go and see this movie and let me know your thoughts on this film in the comments, I would love to hear your opinion, and until next time catch you later.

The Purge Review (Spoilers Ahead!!!)

Now I am a sucker for home invasion movies (and Disney movies) my favourite home invasion film has to be be an independent film called in their skin, here’s a link to tell you a little bit about it if your interested http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Their_Skin but that’s a review for another day, now the purge was intense I mean there were a few moments that had my heart pumping like crazy, so what is this film about well I shall tell you.

So the Purge is about a family whose dad played by Ethan Hawke has his own company selling security systems to people, they live a normal happy life in their gated community they have a son and daughter, the son does nothing until midway through the film but for now we just see him controlling a very awesome remote control car with a very creepy baby whose eyes are cameras, the daughter has a boyfriend who is not meant to be there and keeps on saying that he needs to talk to the dad asap. Now we see various people preparing for the purge… now your probably wondering “but what is the Purge you have been mentioning” good question, the Purge was bought in by the U.S. Government as a way of realeasing the beast (basically your anger) and you can commit any crime including murder, now how does that fall in to our normal family, well as they gather round the tv for the commencement of the annual purge the emergency broadcast goes off thus sounding an alarm, meaning that the Purge has begun.

Now we see the family doing typical things around the house, until the daughters boyfriend comes a knocking and turns out has snuck into the house, so anyway he goes and talks to the dad but as he makes his way down he pulls out a gun ready to shoot the dad, oh dear, so what does Mr Hawke do well he shoots and kills the boyfriend (yeah and you thought your boyfriend/girlfriend parents were bad) so this guy shoots dead his daughters boyfriend, any in this commotion the brother pots something on the tv, he sees a man on the tv wounded and yelling for help, what does this kid do your wondering, well he opens the security doors letting the stranger who this family have never even met into their home (nice going kid)

Now the family get some masked strangers come to their door and ask for them to bring them the stranger, they decide not too (probably not the best decision to make) any way so the strangers get into their home start to kill the family, but the family fight back and kill all the masked strangers off. Now the neighbours come to visit and suddenly the neighbours hold the family hostage (and you thought your neighbours were bad) so the reason why they are holding them hostage is because they are jealous of their lifestyle and how the family live the dad has his own business and they live a happy life, that’s why they are attacking them, so the mother comes up with an idea no more Purging until 7 in the morning (that’s when the Purge ends) so they all sit round the table ignoring each other until the alarm sounds ending the Purge, and then everything turns to normal they say bye to each other the stranger who the kid let in goes home and they live happily ever after apart from fact that they have made a second Purge movie (yay sequel “sarcastic tone” so the credits roll and we learn that this was the most successful Purge ever and also plan for the next Purge.

So my final thoughts on the film, well I thought it was good I mean it was a little far fetched in a way that there would be no such thing as a Purge ever, but apart from that I thought it was really good probably not the best home invasion movie I have seen but nonetheless it was good let me know what you thought of the Purge down in the comments, I would love to hear your thoughts on this film until next time I review a film catch ya later.

My thoughts on Jurassic World

So instead of reviewing a movie I’ve decided to tell you my thoughts on the upcoming summer blockbuster Jurassic World

First of all let’s talk about the marketing side, how are they promoting the movie, well they have launched an offical site for the theme park and I mean actual site, I mean you can see what rides they have, view the park map and lots more here’s the link if you want to check it out for yourself (I would really suggest it it’s an awesome site) http://uk.jurassicworldintl.com

now this is a fantastic idea for selling your movie and they have other ideas (they are already making Lego out of this) so yeah it’s sounding like it could live up to the hype. However the film has come under some criticism mainly the inaccuracy with the dinosaurs themselfs, for example: the mosasaurous (pardon the spelling, some of these dinos are hard to spell) not having a forked tongue, and the velociraptors not having feathers on their head (because that’s important “sarcastic tone”) now the real question is does it have to be accurate, I mean we don’t know for sure if the mosasaurous had a forked tongue or the raptors had feathers. Judging by the pictures I searched on Google images it doesn’t show the mosasaurous having a forked tongue, but we’re getting off subject.

Another good marketing technique jurassic world have done is made several trailers, well three including a teaser for the offical trailer (which I have never seen happen before) once the teaser for the trailer was realeased I was ecstatic I couldn’t wait for the trailer to be released, then the next night on Twitter on the offical Jurassic World page I saw a link that lead straight to YouTube, there as soon I opened the link I was greeted by the title of the video “Jurassic World Offical Trailer” and cue fanboy mode, I mean i was thrilled I jumped up and down and let out a little squeal of excitement. So I viewed the trailer and oh my god it looks fantastic, I mean we finally have an offical jurassic park movie with an offical trailer, ever since the third one came out I was dying for a fourth to come out and now it’s here finally.

So my thoughts on Jurassic World, well I think it looks amazing I mean it really does, the whole film looks amazing and I cannot wait for it to come out in cinemas on June 12 I will definitely be first in line. So that’s my thoughts on Jurassic World, here are the trailers of you want to see for yourselfs.

Whiplash Review

Okay so I have just probably seen the greatest film ever of 2014, a little film called Whiplash, now I had never heard of this film until I saw it the BAFTAS this year so I thought I’d go and see it, and I did and what a film it was tense yes, edge of your seat a big yes, so what made this film so great, well the plot was great as was the acting (particularly J.K Simmons) who pays the psychotic music teacher, Miles Teller plays a student called Andrew Neiman in his first year at Schaffer Conservatory music school, he plays the drums really well and catches the attention of a music teacher named Terrence Fletcher (J.K Simmons) who asks Neiman to join his class with other musicians, Andrew does and cue a ride in to insanity.

J.K Simmons plays the part well as the music teacher, my heart was pounding everytime he yelled at one of his students and in a way you feel sorry for these students especially Neiman who gets slapped by fletcher because he is not following the tempo that fletcher is setting. The whole plot was fantastic as is the jazz music in the film trust me your feet will be tapping along with the soundtrack.

So we see how good Neiman is and my god if you love drumming you will love this movie, mainly  because the drum solos in here are amazing I won’t spoil anything but let’s just say the final solo had me tapping my foot along with it and clapping when it had finished.

If you love a good musical drama then this is the film for you even if your not a fan of drumming if you want to see some amazing drum solos then this is also the film for you. I mean as I was typing this out I was imagining that I was on a drum set, it may not win best picture at the Oscars (boyhood is a real contender this year) but it definitely wins a best picture award from me. Overall I would give Whiplash an awesome 10/10 from me.

American Sniper Review Spoilers Ahead!!!

Now I love a good war film (Saving Private Ryan is number one) but I love a war film that’s based on a true story, films like Lone Survivor and Black Hawk Down, lone survivor is one of them films where at hits you right in the feels and before you know it your crying like niagra falls, however there is one film I have just got back from viewing and that was American Sniper, a film about the deadliest US sniper in history called Chris Kyle with 200 plus kills to his name he earnt the title “the devil” when he was touring in Iraq here’s a link to a Wikipedia page about him if your interested in looking him up (I would advise you didn’t if you don’t like being spoiled with your movies) but nonetheless here is the link http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Kyle

So the story is about kyles life and how he become the deadliest sniper in the US Millitary, we follow him as he does four tours in Iraq and the after effects and how it affects him while trying to be a dad in the process. The film was filled with awesome battle scenes (particularly the last battle where shit hits the fan) there are also some really sad moments, particularly the parts where he’s at home with his wife and he can hear the battlefield. The acting is superb, particularly Bradley Cooper who plays Chris Kyle, I’m shocked this guy Hasn’t won an Oscar/BAFTA for his role in this film he really played the part well.

Now I has been told to watch out for a certain scene in this movie, and everyone was saying to me look out for his baby daughter, so I thought “okay why” and as I’m watching this clip…. Well I can’t describe it so here’s a YouTube video showing you this massively noticeable cock up, watch it and tell me that Mr Eastwood needs a new continuity manager or even better a prop manager https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8W3a7s198LU Yeah kinda hard not to notice that major cock up Mr Eastwood, but did that ruin the film for me? no it didn’t because the film got better and better, and we see just what the effects of war can do to people.

So what do I rate American Sniper? Well the plot was amazing the acting was really impressive and the battle scenes were amazing, overall I would give American Sniper a solid 10/10.

Boyhood review (spoilers ahead!!!)

So the film that’s up for best picture, best director and best supporting actress has been praised by critics saying its a fantastic film, so I thought “hey I’ll have a look at the trailer and see what I think of it” and I did and the trailer only gave me a few little clips of the film not telling me much only the fact that this film was shot for twelve years (starting way back in 2002 and ending in 2013) once I saw that I thought “wow I have to see this” and I did I went to the cinema with some friends and we sat down to watch what I thought was the best non generic film to come out of Hollywood.

So the film was directed by Richard linklater who I had never heard of until I searched for him on rotten tomatoes (a movie reviewing website where critics post their opinion on the latest movies) you may have heard of the cult film dazed and confused well he directed that as well as school of rock.  So the movie, well the first glimpse of the film we see the sky and blaring out the speakers in the cinema Was Yellow by Coldplay (a song which I love) so hearing that in cinema really did bring back some memories of when I was young however they did make me feel really old considering the fact that I’m going to be twenty this month, but nonetheless it was good having a nostalgia trip.

The story: so the story is simple we follow a boy growing up starting at the age of six and working up to 18 but we see what life is like through his eyes, and we see what he goes through like his mum going through several boyfriends (one of which is a raging alcoholic) we see him go through diffrerent changes in his life like moving houses every time the mum gets a new boyfriend. And that’s pretty much it its just his life and what this kid goes through.

Final opinion: I thought Boyhood was a fantastic film and it just goes to show you that Hollywood can make a decent film instead of the generic films they make so overall I give this film a 10/10 mainly because of the way it was filmed I mean 12 years for one film now that’s an achievement.

So I would say go and see it, it’s a really really good movie and trust me you will have a nostalgia trip with this one especially with the soundtrack, I can remember saying a few times “God I remember that song” or “my god I remeber having them in my school” trust me you will. So go and see this film and buy it on DVD or Blue Ray whichever one your in to.
